Flashovers in a Warehouse
One interesting fire we went to was at a carpet warehouse. We were actually the fourth or fifth engine company to roll in on this fire, but for some reason we got the order to take the hose lines into the building. So me and my firefighter each took a hose line in, and that thing was so hot inside that there were flashovers. A flashover is where the ceiling gets so hot that the fire just rolls right across it. It almost looks like a backdraft, except it has a slow rolling motion instead of a fast explosive one.
We were laying on these rolls of carpet, and we would hit the ceiling and then start working around to the other fire areas. Then all of the sudden there would be a big boom, and here come these flashovers again. To a normal person it would probably have been really scary to see this fire rolling at them. But it was really pretty. There was some aluminum in the insulation up there, and when aluminum burns sometimes it causes the fire to have blue and green in it. That was really a beautiful sight.
We were in there for about a half hour, just the two of us, fighting that fire. We had a flashover about every five minutes until the other companies got the roof and all of the doors opened up. That was a neat fire, and I enjoyed it a lot.
